I am an elementary school teacher and a child’s vocabulary level has a high correlation to their reading comprehension. In a time of dropping vocabulary levels, this is a quick and easy game that has students checking the dictionary and expanding their vocabulary in a fun way. (I allow them to use the dictionary to check words or “find” words as they play.) I also “allow” them to expand to Scrabble and Upwords when they want more challenge. Students who never opted to play vocabulary games are now playing both of these.
I bought one game initially and just bought more so the whole class can play at one time. This is one way to expand their knowledge that they think is a reward.

I love playing Scrabble Upwords online, so when I went to buy this as a Christmas present for someone else, I couldn’t wait for them to open it so I could play it. The game does not disappoint from the online version. The only I would change (as has been mentioned in other reviews) is that the game pieces sit very loosely on the board. So if you’re playing on the floor, or with someone fidgety, there’s a good chance you’ll be trying to replace tiles when they get knocked off.
Overall, this game is a good one to add to your collection. It’s fun, challenging, and there’s nothing like the feeling of scoring big on someone else’s word!

Friends introduced this “toy” or word game one weekend. It took a few minutes to master, occasionally substituting Srabble’s rules then correcting myself. Ever since we’ve played Upwards instead of Scrabble — it’s faster and more portable — great fun for wordsmiths. A challenge to build up; perhaps add a prefix or suffix — easy to score. Enjoy!

My husband, 12-year-old daughter and I picked up this game while on vacation recently. It really passed the time during a rain-in, stuck in the hotel. We were all challenged by the game, but it was not impossible at all. After the first game, we were all coming up with much bigger and better words.
Overall, it’s a good concept and a very cool game. Like scrabble, but more fun!

Upwords has been around for a 25+ years, and it’s a stacking letter tile game that brings a whole lot more strategy and flexibility to the table, when compared to Scrabble. With Scrabble, words are built – hopefully on double-triple word score spaces – and then they’re essentially cast in concrete for the whole game. Unchangeable. With UPWORDS, a word is fair game for modifications and higher scoring. A letter atop another letter has greater value. It is very strategic and lot more flexible a game. Why on earth it is called “Scrabble Upwords” is a good question. If you like UPWORDS, you likely don’t like Scrabble all that much. And if you are a Scrabble player, likely you are dedicated to the flat construction of words, which I personally find boring. One reviewer complained about the smell of plastic. Hello. No trees died in the making of UPWORDS. Perhaps ivory tiles? Never mind…..
