Scrabble word game – A Brief Overview

Scrabble word game – A Brief Overview

The Scrabble word game works as a crossword based board game. The overall game is usually played involving 2 and four players or by matchups of two. Every player or group competes alongside the other group by forming text utilizing lettered tiles (scrabble pieces). Each term should be spelled properly and cannot intersect an additional term without forming another word (similar to a crossword puzzle). The only correct way to form a phrase is through the placement of tiles either ‘Across’ or ‘Up and Down’ – no diagonals, just like a crossword puzzle.

The Scrabble term game board measures 15 by 15 tiles, both horizontal and vertical covering the board. Included are colored ‘bonus’ squares. These ‘bonus’ squares are scattered throughout to allow for the accumulation of more points.

Every lettered tile is assigned a point value, notated on the bottom right corner of every tile.

Game play begins with all scrabble pieces being placed inside a bag, called the ‘pot’. All person in succession draws a tile until all has seven tiles. These seven scrabble pieces may be placed in a ‘rack’ for viewing by the participant. Otherwise, they are placed in a manner, determined by the person, to prevent other players from viewing their tiles. The remaining tiles are left in a common area to be used later as a drawing ‘pot’.

Scrabbles’ crossword form is dictated through the use of the ‘center tile’ from which game play must begin. The player to go first must form a phrase that covers the center tile. Every person in succession must use any letter of the first term to form a new word. Additionally, succeeding players may merely add any additional letter or letters, forming a new term. As every term is formed points are accumulated by the participant forming the word.

On all turn, the participant has the option of using his or her scrabble pieces to form a new word, passing, or exchanging an equal number of tiles from his rack with tiles from the ‘pot’. In either case, after passing or exchanging, that players turn is over and play continues clockwise.

The Scrabble phrase game scoring system was designed based on the frequency of occurrence of every letter in the English language. Each letter is assigned a point value based on this. The longer the word, the greater possibility of points awarded. Also, as game play progresses and words begin to intersect, the participant making the connection obtains points. The letter ‘G’ would be worth more points to a participant, as opposed to the letter ‘A’. The same is true for a person using the letter ‘Q’ as it would generate more points than a using ‘G’

To spice things up a bit, the Scrabble game board contains several colored squares. These squares are called ‘bonus’ tiles. The bonus tiles award bonus points as they are covered by a tile. The bonus are titled ‘double letter points’, ‘triple letter points’, ‘double word points, and ‘triple term points’. By forming a word with a tile that handles any of the abovementioned tiles the term ‘LIKE’ which as a total point value of 8, as is. Applying this scoring system (L =1 I=1 K=4 E=1) in collaboration with a bonus tile, the 8 points easily converts to 24 points. The scoring possibilities become seemingly endless.

The Scrabble word game is over when there are no more scrabble pieces to be drawn or any player has ‘passed’ more than six times. The winner is then determined by the greatest total points.

Scrabble is one of my favorite games ever. I remember playing the game as a kid and am not surprised at all that I still enjoy playing it. I actually have a full store devoted to Scrabble. Scrabble Blast

Scrabble Blast

Scrabble Blast is an online word game you can download and play. Scrabble Blast requires you to race against a clock, so it has elements of video games like Space Invaders or Tetris. Players find words, while the game screen speeds up ever faster. Accummulate points to prove your vocabulary and spelling skills.

At first glance, the game screen looks a lot like a Scrabble board, except a gameboard that’s filled up with letters. You have to find word patterns amidst these random looking word sequences, building words like you would in a regular game of Scrabble, except you can create words diagonally. That might take some getting used to, for you Scrabble purists.

The Bomb Challenge

The twist with a game of Scrabble Blast is you’re playing against a timer. Every so often, a bomb square appears at the top of the screen. As the game progresses, these squares shift down the board. Like in Checkers, if one ever reaches the other side of the board, bad things happen (you lose).

Luckily, you can eliminate bomb icons by building a word over the bomb. When you do, you hear an explosion and see the icon disappear. The game goes faster, until you can no longer hold back the inevitable bomb that gets through.

Winning a game of Scrabble Blast is about attaining the highest score, so you’re pitting yourself against all other players. There are two versions of the bomb game: Puzzle Mode and Action Mode.

Blasted Word Games

Scrabble Blast is therefore a competition for finding already existing words amidst a jumble of letter icons, instead of building words from letter tiles. This means the challenge might not appeal to every word game afficionado.

At the same time, those who enjoy video games can brush up on their word skills and spelling ability, so those who don’t like when their favorite games are changed shouldn’t get too upset. Scrabble Blast is a good way for the younger generation to increase their spelling ability. For those who visit online forums and message boards, you know that can’t be a bad thing.

1 Bag Scrabble Mode

Playing Scrabble Blast includes other word game variations, such as the “1 Bag Mode”. 1-Bag gives you 100 letter tiles and challenges you to build as many words as possible. This is more like the wordgame you grew up playing, so old-timers are more likely to find enjoyment with this option.

I loved this board because I got to start it with the word gnosis.

So! Everyone who sees this (and who enjoys games) . . .
1. Play a game of Scrabble–against yourself if you have to.
2. Take a shot of the final board.
3. Tell us something it shows about you (and, if you like, and you played against someone else, tell us something it showed about your opponent.)
4. Invite others to join in. 🙂

CheapestScrabble Slam Deluxe Card Game

Fun word game

If you enjoy word games, you will like this. We modified the rules a little so our special needs daughter can enjoy it too. Not sure paying the deluxe version price is worth it. Seems like alot to pay for a plastic tray that just keeps the cards in place.

Scrabble Slam Game

This is a fun game. I believe you need to be able to spell at least 4 letter words to play. We had 3 people and the game moves very quickly. It is fun and somewhat educational.

CheapScrabble Slam Deluxe Card Game

Love it!

I love this game. Being a scrabble fan, this game is easy and quicker than a board game. Probably wouldn’t have purchased the Deluxe version. The only difference is a holder for the four cards versus laying them down on the table. Received this product much sooner than I thought.Scrabble on Speed

I find the game stimulating and so different from other games I’ve played. I am most skilled verbally (but math scares the hell out of me), and this game is a challenge because it is played with only 4 letter words, so vocabulary is not of much concern. I like it for me as an elder citizen (62 y/o) because I feel it keeps me verbally alert at an important time in my life to do that. I like it a lot because I can play with my friends and my 5 & 6 year old great-nieces. Also, it is very compact and can easily be played on a plane or in a car, etc. Anyone can play and most everyone will enjoy its fast paced structure, ease for all ages, and super-easy to take it along when traveling. Plus, it will keep the kids occupied, adults can play with kids, and it will keep adults occupied as time flies by! Even though I have good verbal skills, I am not the winner in at least 3/4 of the games I play. I can write, I know words, and think/speak well “on my feet,” but I am just not as fast as many others! They love that!!

another topic:
One of my friends and I play regular Scrabble just about every time she can get here or I can to her home (we live over 25 miles apart) and we started keeping count, and use a steno pad for keeping record of each game. We are up to #125. We had many more games before we started this steno pad, keeping the pages numbered. Some might say we’re a bit obsessive/compulsive but we just keep on playing. Both of us experience what we call “Jonesing” for a game after about 4 days without playing!

Try These Scrabble House Rules

Try These Scrabble House Rules

Any family with a Scrabble tradition has doubtless developed their own set of house rules, particularly if that household includes children requiring modifications. House rules can make play more interesting and lively, place an emphasis on learning rather than competition, or simply be used to speed the game up. Below, are some common house rules I’ve heard about or used at home. Each rule adds its own twist to the game. I welcome you to try them!

Eternal Bonus Squares: I was raised on this one. What was my disappointment when I found out at a friend’s house that the rules killed the efficacy of the bonus square once it was covered! By deeming them “eternal,” meaning they remain in force and count every time the word is added to, each move becomes more rewarding than the first. Scores soar into the hundreds. Egos inflate. The skillful player must try to make words that can’t be added to, at least when covering a bonus square.

Blank Tile Substitution: This rule keeps the blank tiles in constant circulation. For instance, if someone uses a blank on the board in place of a T, and you later wind up with a T on your rack, you can substitute the real letter and re-use the blank. This is really nice toward the end of the game when everyone is down to the nubs, letter-wise.

Allowable Dictionary Use/Broadening the Word Base: To give the game more educational significance, we’ve sometimes allowed players to browse the dictionary when it wasn’t their turns. This rule is especially helpful for children or beginners, whose vocabulary base may still be limited. If playing against more seasoned opponents, the use of a dictionary, along with offering free challenges, can even the playing field. When my sister and I were learning German we purchased a German Scrabble set and mixed it in with the English letters. Words from either language were allowed. Since letters have varying degrees of usage in different languages the point value and letter distribution will vary among foreign sets. This made our game even more interesting. Scrabble sets can be purchased on the internet in many different languages.

Free Trades: Allowing free trades of the following combinations reduces the element of luck, and can make the game more fun.

Two pair

Three of the same letter

Six vowels

Six consonants

Of course, the blank tile can not be used to substitute for any letter in a trade. Y can be used as a vowel or a consonant, to the player’s advantage. Only one trade is allowed per turn, although your tiles may be rejected if it restores one of the above conditions to your rack.

Take Two: This last suggestion isn’t so much a house rule, but an alternative game which can be played using Scrabble tiles. The number of players is unlimited, and can be practiced alone, or played in a large group. The more players, the faster the game will go. To play, turn all the tiles face down in the middle of the table. Each player draws seven tiles, turning them over in front of him or her. Laying letters in words across and down, players attempt to connect all their letters. The first player to do so calls out, “Take two!” and everyone draws two more tiles. The game continues until the tiles run out. The winner is the first player to use all his of her tiles. The value of unused tiles is counted and a negative score is recorded. (The winner scores a perfect zero.) This game may be played in successive rounds if a longer version is desired.
